Dirk Nowitzki on NBA Draft: "I never promised I would go to the NBA"

In a recent appearance on the podcast "The Thanalysis Show" hosted by Milwaukee Bucks player Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Dirk Nowitzki discussed his decision to enter the NBA draft.

Nowitzki revealed that he did not attend the draft in person as he was in Germany at the time. He said, "I wasn't sure, and at the time, I thought maybe I would continue playing in Europe. I never promised I would go to the NBA, and I didn't think I would be selected with a high pick."

However, just a day or two after the draft, Don Nelson appeared in Nowitzki's hometown and expressed interest in having him on the team. Nowitzki recalled, "He said, 'Hey, we want you.' He flew me back to Dallas, where I met Steve Nash and Michael Finley. I liked it there, and I made the decision to play there."

Nowitzki's decision to join the NBA instead of pursuing a career in Europe ultimately led to a highly successful 21-season career with the Dallas Mavericks, earning him numerous accolades and making him one of the greatest power forwards in NBA history.
